Heritage Wake Forest

The Heritage Story

Heritage Wake Forest gracefully adorns land that is rich in a heritage of its own. More than 50 years prior to its development, much of the land functioned as a thriving dairy farm, owned by Emmitt Marshall and his son-in-law, Phil Stroud. Today, they live less than one mile away from Heritage Wake Forest and often visit the community and the friends they’ve made there.

Once Jud Ammons purchased the land in 1986, he and son Andy began planting trees to replenish the necessary clearing, and to accentuate the views. In four years, they planted over 1.1 million trees around Heritage Wake Forest, spending over $1 million in their efforts to re-create, and even enhance, the natural beauty of the original landscape.

Andy and Jud enhance each newly developed neighborhood within Heritage with mature trees from those planted in 1986, moving or bringing in trees to enrich the community, as beneficial buffering or beautiful streetscaping. They even allow builders to transplant some of the trees on their building sites, making them look instantly mature.

Wayne Funderburke, a resident at Heritage Wake Forest, remarks on its visual appeal, “…Ammons Development took great pains to see that the beauty of this tract of land was not compromised, but rather enhanced, by the placement of streets and homes, preserving the natural terrain.”
